Project: Macclesfield Town Centre Heritage

macc sq.jpg

Market Square is the centrepiece of Macclesfield Conservation Area with the Grade 1 Listed Town Hall and Grade Two star Saint Michael's Church framing the distant views of the Peak District. The natural stone surfaces laid in the late 1980's had become broken and damaged by HGV egress into the pedestrianised areas. The heritage environment was degraded by the ugly hoardings and props on the Saint Michael's Church retaining wall. Empty shops blighted the streetscene. Initially Shea prepared costed Historic Environment and Lighting Strategies outlining necessary maintenance and repairs to street lighting columns, hard oaving, structures including retaining walls and street furniture.

When funding became available the strategy was implemented with Shea delivering the following improvements:

  • Assessment and Tree removal of diseased Trees impacting on the retaining walls of the graveyard and 16th Century Savage Chapel with William Morris stained glass panels;

  • Bat Survey and Mitigation;

  • Restoration of cobbled and stone paved surfaces, ironwork gates and railings,

  • Street Lighting Lantern replacement with LED;and

  • LED feature lighting of Town Hall and adjacent street trees.
