Project: Leeds City College

The urban significance of the new Leeds City College, Quarry Hill Campus demanded a carefully considered Architectural and Landscape response. The confined urban site for the impressive nine storey building was highly constrained by the location of existing notable buildings including Yorkshire Playhouse and the Motorway. The building was designed by Ellis Williams Architects. As Landscape Architect for the project, Shea's aim was to create a distinctive and high quality landscape environment; a new cultural space that would act as "front of house" to the schools of Creative Art and Social Science. The hard landscape detailing seamless connects the first floor podium deck with the disabled access car park and adjacent plaza. Levels were a complex issue to enable inclusive access via steps and ramps to podiums and roof terraces. The result is stunning views of the city from an inspiring educational environment for all students and staff. Acting as Ecologist for the project, Shea detailed Bird and Bat boxes into the building's soffits and incorporated brick faced Sparrow, Starling and Bat boxes into the waste transfer station.
